Michael Mizrachi propelled himself into WSOP folklore with a stunning victory in the Poker Players' Championship. The final table turned into a family affair with brother Robert, the overnight chip leader also making up the last eight players. However, it was Michael, who prevailed to win the coveted bracelet and a $1,559,046 payday.
The final days play started with a tribute to the late Chip Reese, whose name is proudly associated with the event since its HORSE format days. Michael who was chip leader on day 3 started the day in the fifth position, he sat quietly through the eliminations of Mikael Thuritz and Daniel Alaei. Before Michael ramped into overdrive to remove both David Baker and his brother Robert. Michael still had plenty to do as Oppenheim was tearing up the felt with over half the chip's in play at one stage.
John Juanda departed next failing to add to his four World Series bracelets, Oppenheim departed eventually in third place, setting up a heads-up battle with Mizrachi. The two battled it out for 82 hands, before Mizrachi "The Grinder," ground down the amiable Schmelev to win his first bracelet after multiple World Series cashes. Well supported from the rail Michael clearly emotional after his win thanked his fans; "It really helps when you have friends and family that supported me like they did today," he said to ESPN.com. The victory makes the Mizrachi brothers only the second in history, to both hold a WSOP bracelet after the Grant and Blair Hinkle.
Well done indeed, and it should go some way to appeasing his well documented problems with the IRS.
