Home - Latest News - Negreanu spends big bucks to renew his passport in a hurry
Daniel Negreanu is a very successful professional poker player. He has lifetime tournament winnings of almost $13 million. He has won 4 World Series of Poker bracelets and 2 World Poker Tour titles. Negreanu has been to 1 European Poker Tour final table but came away without a title. So the one big title that Daniel Negreanu is missing is the European Poker Tour. Having both a WSOP and WPT title puts Negreanu in a very elite group of poker professionals. However, competitiveness is one of the characteristics that make a poker player great. That said Negreanu is hungry for his first EPT Title.
This last week Negreanu has been in Los Angeles playing in the North American Poker Tour Main Event that was held at the Bicycle Casino. This tournament was eventually won by Joe Tehan. Negreanu had been planning on heading to Spain for the EPT Event in Barcelona and then on to play in the Asia Pacific Poker Tour Event in Sydney, Australia. The problem was that his passport was about to expire on December 5th which was not enough time for him to be abroad for both of these events. Apparently Negreanu’s assistant had sent off for the renewal but did not realize that the Canadian Government authorities take up to four weeks to process and return the passport.
Knowing a couple of important people, Negreanu was able to have some of his contacts pull a few strings for him and make arrangements to expedite the process. He drove from Los Angeles to his home in Las Vegas only to find out that he needed to be at the Vancouver passport office in six hours in order to get his passport processed in time. There was not any commercial flight that would get him there in time so Negreanu had to hire a private jet to get there in time at a cost of $15,000. Adding to that the $2,500 return flight and this was a pretty expensive passport renewal.
When you have had as much success in your field as Daniel Negreanu has had in his, you need to constantly have goals. Winning an EPT Title is probably second on his list to winning the World Series of Poker Main Event. Negreanu had rarely attended EPT Events in the past but has taken in seriously this past season. He has had some success in the EPT events winning a side event at EPT Vilamoura, minor cash in the £5,000 EPT London Main Event, and just recently making it to the final table and finishing fourth at EPT Vienna.
Daniel Negreanu was born in Toronto, Canada on July 26th, 1974. He is ranked second in all time career earnings behind Phil Ivey and is currently the star of the poker game show “Million Dollar Challenge”. Negreanu is a very big presence at any table he sits at and is jovial and vocal. He is known for his amazing ability to read hands which he says comes from observing what hands his opponents play and how capable they are of playing them.
