Phil "Unabomber" Laak slipped away from the WSOP spotlight for a split second (well, 115 hours actually) and came back with a Guinness World Record for the longest poker game in history. The Unabomber outstayed the previous record of 78 hours 45mins set by Paul Zimbler (not officially recorded) last August, by the considerable margin of nearly 37 hours.
The Bellagio Hotel-Casino bear witness to this feat of stamina, endurance; darn right stubbornness. Laak supported by his partner Jennifer Tilly, who railed throughout and many fans who were watching live on webcam. As the clock placed by the poker table ticked on to 115 hours, Laak called time on his attempt and landed himself in the record books by nearly two days, over the last official effort of Larry Olmsted's which lasted 72 hours and 2 minutes in 2004. Olmsted's attempt is still the previous world record, as Zimbler's effort at a London casino in September is not officially recognised because of it not being recorded.
Afterwards, Laak said, "Wow, 115 hours, I should have my head examined," Yes, Phil, we always thought that anyway. The 37 year-old started the marathon at 12:00 Pm local time on Wednesday and bailed out at 7:00 am on Monday. It only allowed a short interval of 5 minutes every hour, or he could roll over the break's to build a larger one later. " I am definitely sick" Laak said, after he only mustered about one 30 minute nap during the whole record attempt.
Official paperwork and the webcam evidence is now set to be checked over by Guinness World Records, but it looks a formality to be admitted into the book, as 160,000 odd webcam viewers can testify for the achievement. Not only is Laak now a Record holder, he also made a tidy profit of $6,766 which, he selflessly donated to the charity Camp Sunshine based in Maine. Good work Mr Laak you are an honourable gentleman and I hope you hold on to this record for some time.
