What, with all the excitement over the last few days regarding the World Cup, I decided that it was high time for an update of goings on at the World Series of Poker. We are well into the mid twenties regarding the tournament count and notable winners recently are abundant.
Eric Buchman who finished fourth in last years main event, stormed to an impressive victory in event #18 the $2,000 buy-in Limit Hold' em. The PokerStars professional won his first bracelet, when defeating Brent Courson in a heads-up battle. Buchman was chip leader through-out and made few errors at the final table, winning the majority of showdowns and with some aggressive bullying he always looked in control. At last years WSOP main event Buchman picked up $2.5 million for his efforts, the purse may not have been as large, but with the $203,607 first prize added he has now tournament career earnings of over $3.5 million. Plus a gold bracelet of-course.
Following on from his Players Championship final table David "Bakes" Baker took down Event #19: $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball, beating all comers on a tough final table which was evenly stacked. It was a who's who of the poker world on the final table with PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu and George Danzer in the final group, in addition to John Juanda, Erik Seidel; John Monnette, Andy Bloch and Eric Cloutier.
Baker, however, was certainly up for the challenge as he patiently eliminated five out of the six other players at the final table, in addition to knocking out Negreanu in eighth place. For his efforts, Baker takes home $294,314 and is now in serious contention for the 2010 WSOP Player of the Year, thanks to his $50,000 Players Championship final table and now this win.
